HORTI Tengeru is a government non-profit organization under the Ministry of Agriculture Food security and Cooperatives. The institute is under the the department of research and training of the ministry of Agriculture. It was established in 1980 with the objective of doing research and providing training on diploma level on horticultural crops.
The institute researches on fruits, vegetables, spices, banana, mushroom, vegetable seed production and maintainance of foundation seed. It also researches on root and tuber crops. The institute has a total workforce of abour 46 employees out of which 14 are researchers and 13 are research assistants.
Some achievements include the release of three tomato varieties namely Tengeru 97, Tanya and Meru. While the first two varieties are high yielding ... and having hard fruits for longer shelf life, the third var. is resistant to late blight disease. Read more
